PCP Air Rifle Pellets: How to Choose the Right Ammunition for Your Gun

October 16, 2026 By Lily James

A PCP air rifle is only as accurate as the pellet it fires. Shooters often spend considerable time comparing rifles while treating ammunition as an afterthought. That is a mistake. Pellet weight, head design, and fit all influence velocity, energy transfer, and group size. Understanding how to match Pinty airguns with the right pellets is one of the most practical improvements a shooter can make.

Why Pellet Weight Matters

Lighter pellets travel faster but lose velocity more quickly and are more affected by wind. Heavier pellets retain energy downrange but drop more over distance and consume air faster. The sweet spot for most .22 caliber PCP rifles falls between 14 and 18 grains.

Hard Air Magazine’s testing of the Pinty Nightfall PCP air rifle illustrates the trade-off clearly. With 10.03-grain alloy pellets, the rifle exceeded 1,000 FPS but produced only 21.55 ft-lbs of energy. With heavier lead pellets, velocity dropped, but muzzle energy rose to 27.24 ft-lbs. For hunting, the heavier pellet is almost always the better choice. For flat-trajectory target work, the lighter pellet has advantages.

Head Design: Domed, Hollow Point, and Wadcutter

Domed pellets are the most versatile option. Their aerodynamic shape produces stable flight and predictable accuracy across a wide range of distances. Most .22 PCP rifles shoot domed pellets well, and they are a sensible starting point for any new gun.

Hollow point pellets expand on impact, which can improve energy transfer on small game. However, expansion is not guaranteed at lower velocities, and hollow points sometimes sacrifice a small amount of accuracy compared to domed designs. They are worth testing for hunting applications but should not be assumed to be superior in every scenario.

Wadcutter pellets have flat heads that cut clean holes in paper targets, making them ideal for scoring and close-range accuracy work. Their blunt shape creates more drag, so they lose velocity quickly and are not suitable for hunting or long-distance shooting.

Fit and Consistency

Pellet head diameter varies slightly between manufacturers and even between tins from the same brand. A pellet that fits the bore well will shoot more consistently than one that is too loose or too tight. For most .22 caliber PCP rifles, head sizes between 5.50 mm and 5.53 mm are worth testing. The Pinty PCP air rifle lineup generally performs well with quality domed pellets in the 14–16 grain range.

Consistency also depends on the regulator. A well-regulated rifle like the Pinty Timber or Vanguard delivers stable velocities across the fill, which means pellet performance stays predictable. When velocity varies by only a few FPS from shot to shot, group sizes tighten noticeably.

How to Test Pellets in Your Rifle

Buy small quantities of several pellet types and weights, then shoot five-shot groups at 20–25 yards from a stable rest. Record group size and point of impact for each pellet. The best pellet is not the one that shoots fastest—it is the one that groups consistently and places shots where you aim.

Once you find a pellet that works, buy a full tin and stick with it. Changing ammunition introduces a new variable that requires re-zeroing and re-testing. In PCP shooting, consistency is accuracy. For shooters running Pinty platforms, starting with domed pellets in the 14–18 grain range and adjusting from there is a reliable approach that covers target shooting, pest control, and small game hunting.
